Many of my Japanese collection are manual wind!! Seiko, Citizen, Orient, and Ricoh/Takano made many mid to high quality hand-wind models/movements in the '50s, '60s, & '70s!! First Japanese automatics (with Japanese designed & manufactured calibre) weren't around until 2nd half of the '50s.
Some examples:
1. Seiko:
early -> mid '60s higher quality
Movement shot is from another example in my collection. This is the "1st Generation" un-numbered calibre which preceeded the 44A and 4402. The 4402 shown earlier is the Date version of the 44A, which like the "1st Generation" had no calendar.
late'50s, the hi-end of Seiko product line (before intro of Grand Seiko):
side view of another example of same model in my collection:
and what the "Lord" developed out of, the "Marvel" (came in 17, 19, and 21 jewel variants):
The Marvel was introduced by Seiko (Hattori Corp.) on "Time Memorial Day" in mid 1956!!
A slightly later version of Marvel, also 19j but with Diashock instead of the earlier shock protection system:
From the Daini division in the mid to late '50s:
Seiko UNIQUE U14012 15j
This movement is much like the Suwa division's Super, the predecessor to their Marvel.
appears to be a vintage re-dial from Japan(?) with quirky spelling of a Citizen model name!!
and a later generation of Lord Marvel (early to mid '60s) using the 5740 movement after the Marvel architecture was retired:
late '60s to '70s higher quality items:
36,000bph on this one!!
2. Orient
mid '50s to about 1960:
top-of-the line models of early '60s:
Royal, here in it's Calendar version
Grand Prix hand-wind (there were also automatics in this line):
Also came in non-calendar variant as well.
3. Citizen
ca 1949 to mid '50s:
"ladder dial" typical of the period from various manufacturers:
higher quality early '60s:
Sorry, no movement shot.
