Short version to a complicated story is I've ended up with this watch. I brought for a friend off funkster earlier this year but my friend didn't gel with the watch so it's now mine.
Watch condition when I took ownership of this beauty.
You'll see the hand lume has gone black as had all the lume and you'll also notice some dial damage beneath the sub minute hand.
The watch needed some resto mainly because it had no pusher or crown gaskets so mold had got to grips with the original lume. It had also allowed some dial damage to occur under the sub minute hands center. I matched the exact colour by eye (this was my job once) and touched the damage in with my airbrush.
Old lume stripped off ready for relume
Next I serviced the movement. This was in good shape but really needed some serious cleaning. I think I recorded it loosing over 800 minutes per day at one angle. I replaced the mainspring with a NOS item. I had to heat the palet jewels and reseat them as they were loose. I done this by placing the palet on a hot tray which is a old clockmakers trick to melt the shellac aka bug juice that holds the palet jewels in place. I also had to replace a couple of bits to do with the chrono reset mech once again due to the gaskets being missing and damp entering the watch.
You'll notice the incorrect and likely homemade winding stem in this photo. It actually worked ok!
Timegrapher results before service:
Timegrapher results below are after service. I will get these results better I've just left this way for intial test period but still not bad results.
Finally I had to re finish the case. This had been badly over polished taking away most of the metal finishes from Seiko and the case had just been spun in a lathe with sandpaper to give a bad brushed metal finish. So I stripped the case and removed any dents and damage not too deep. I then repolished and 'correctly' refinished the watch using various flapper wheels to get the correct metal finishes. I replaced the crystal with a NOS domed early crystal I'd been storing for a rainy day and these are the end results. I'm happy with it
