At long last, picked up a bullhead worth owning. Every other one that has ever come my way has been a wreck, or had a horribly overpolished case (why does that happen?), but not this one. I've owned a JDM speedtimer before, it was my first bullhead. Case was so polished it looked like it had melted. I sold that one off years ago. But then this one came my way yesterday, totally unanticipated. Wow. First real shots, haven't done anything to it. Crystal is hazy like someone sanded it. It's got vertical scratches all down the surface, no idea why. It literally looks like someone put it on a belt sander. Insert is great despite this. Caselines are like knives. Movement is beautiful but needs service. No fading to anything. I don't know when I'll ever get time to do a service on this, but it'll happen sometime, someday. threw it on a bracelet!

I just worked on one of these. Sadly the case was corroded where the case back gasket fits. There was also a fair amount of rust on the movement but it was running fine. I touched up any pivots I could reach(without taking the movement completely apart) with some fresh oil. The oil helped boost the amplitude and then I adjusted it. In spite of the sad looking condition, the movement has excellent amplitude(240+) in all positions, 0.0 to 0.1 beat error and a rate that only varies between +7 and -4 sec per day. All the chrono functions worked perfectly and the big chrono hand snapped smartly back to 12 exactly. He wanted me to tear it down but I just couldn't bring myself to destroy such a wonderful machine even if it is aesthetically challenged. I will have to practice my hand on a donor that I can't make worse than it is I don't know if the owner is going to sell it as a parts watch or hang on to it until he finds a good case. Maybe he will offer it up in the sales forum.

I love the colors. It's like a snapshot of a particular era. It looks fantastic on that bracelet. Good luck with the project. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

I agree; the brown and smokey topaz colours are very specific to that era. Seiko was good at picking colour schemes that worked and have become timeless

I didn't service it, but I did put a new crystal in. The original one was clearly sanded. I think someone was trying to work on getting scratches out. They literally took a sanding block to it.
