This is a really good thread. Great information. Hopefully future Google searches will come to this thread as a resource. The only thing I'll add is the pic of my caseback that I have previously posted - for reference for dates of the Seahorse casebacks.

Hey hibeat, am I able to start a new thread about this and make it a sticky, we can post all the different dial and cashback variations from year to year for the marvel. Or should I start it in a different section?

Sounds like a possible re-dial situation. Post 5 times then post a photo. Mine says "hi": Hi. Tell me about the dark dial , i have never seen one, it's original or reprinted?

Just to follow up on this, I recently saw another example of this dial and hand-set in a sample watch being sold from the U.S.A.: The case was a 5740-8000 rather than a 5740-8009 though, from October 1967, serial number 7003110, so it seems that there might have been at least one other, earlier, batch made: I wish I had gotten it, but I only saw it after it had already sold on eBay - it was sold on 14th January.

Now I'd like to find out as much as possible about it.

I now own the watch that Matt had, but I don't have any more information about it other than what I posted earlier in this thread. I'd be interested to know if your example is a -8000 or a -8009, its serial number, and if you have any photos of it. Thank you very much!

I created an Instagram post about the watch. You can have a look all photos there. Thanks! Knowing the full serial number would help give some information to help determine how many of these were made.

The 45 movements stutter a lot. Kinda sucks for the level of movement it is. Reason is an absurdly long drivetrain, indirectly driven 4th wheel with no backlash compensation. The 57 is directly driven with a short drivetrain. It's a beauty and the LM36000 sweep hand moves so smoothly it's a thing to behold. Much smoother than my KS 36000 4502 and even modern Grand Seikos running at 10 bps. BUT those hands are wrong. I think the dial is original with a tasteful but confused re-text with new incorrect hands. Case back is correct many of these were Seahorse backs but more were horseshoes like yours.

I think there is no more than few hundreds exist from this 8009 variant.
