836 days later, I’m 53 seconds fast, which is around a 23 seconds/year rate - dropped off a bit, but still hanging in there.

rossr that’s awesome. I haven’t had a watch that hasn’t required a battery update or re-set in that time! Glad to see it’s holding strong. Did you see they have reissued that watch in the eco drive range?

Yes camrok , I have thought about the top left model a number of times. I have never seen the original solar Cosmotron prototype outside of a few publicity shots, so I suspect there are no private owners of this model - if one even exists. It is strange that it is described as a Crystron prototype rather than a Cosmotron or Solar Cell prototype.

Well, it has been a while since my last update, but here it is. Still running strong after 1008 days since 8th April 2019 on the same battery (not running on solar). Currently running 69 seconds fast, which is a daily rate of 0.068 seconds/day, 25 seconds/year, or 2.1 seconds/month.

Now that I got one I have digged some more into it and I understood that when it runs with a battery (386 like the manual states, thanks for that ) it is solar assisted and the battery life is 5 years (I believe similar watch without out any assistance would drain the battery in 2 years). So I guess it is running with solar all the time? Nice accuracy. Any idea when it was last serviced?

It is running on a 344 (I have another that might have a 386 - I can't remember), but was not aware if the solar function had any relevance when a regular cell was fitted. I don't wear it all the time anyway, so it spends most of its time out of sunlight in a drawer. It was serviced in January 2019.

Attention: I wish to advise of the recent expiry of the 344 battery that has been powering the Citizen Solar Cell since 8th April 2019. The watch was found on Sunday 13th of February at a time of 10:55am and 40 seconds. The battery supplied necessary electrical power to the movement for 1043 days, or, for;
90,115,200 seconds (that is a lot of ticking) 1,501,920 minutes
25,032 hours 149 weeks It was accurate to the very end. A new battery will be fitted, and the performance monitored periodically.

rossr I am curious if this watch, when not on your wrist, receives any sunlight or ambient light when idle?
From what I have gathered about the Solar Crystron series the solar array is in parallel with the 344 cell such that abundant light energy might take a load off the chemical power source and improve it's longevity.
Any way you slice it, it's a cool watch and I intend to own one some day soon!

There is a bit of intrigue regarding the "assist" functionality between the panels and the battery. I don't know the true answer. This particular watch spent a fair bit of time in a dark drawer - as well as on my wrist - and never missed a beat for 90 million seconds. I have another Solar Cell piece, that I have not opened up. When this second piece stopped functioning after being in a drawer for a while, I put it in sunlight, and it started up again.

Also is this the EFA caliber or regular 8629? This is the regular 8629, but importantly, it was serviced, and adjusted. The only 86xx EFA is the very uncommon 8650.

I would expect the watch that stopped running on it's cell that started back up in sunlight would near immediately stop once moved back into darkness. Do you recall that being the case? I really need to find myself one of these to learn more about, I am fascinated with them! I wish I could find a nice technical manual like I have for the Seiko watches. Still with a bit of luck I could probably trace the circuit and know the answer.

That's what I thought as well, but I remember coming across one of these with an EFA written on the board and now I managed to find it again. watchcharts.com/listing/1633303/citizen-crystron-solar-cell-quartz-wrist-watch-workingMost likely a franken piece as the parts are interchangeable across the 86xx, but still makes me wonder... Most likely it's an added sticker, but if not, then it would be a real thing as the solar variant is the only circuit with holes for the solar panel connectors.
